Support water for wildlife and you could win a Carmen Island Desert Sheep Hunt!
In 1995, twenty six (26) ewes and four (4) O.c. weemsi desert bighorn rams were introduced. The Carmen Island population has increased to some five hundred sheep. In 2004, Mexico Hunts launched the hunting program offering a unique island hunting opportunity and exceptional trophies taken with an impressive 100% success rate with rifle and bow hunters. The monies generated from these hunts have funded nearly one-hundred (100) sheep to be relocated off the island through a program with the Mexican Federal Government.
Scope of Project:
Two desalination machines will be placed to provide fresh water to several wildlife guzzlers. This will aid not only the sheep but other mammals, birds, insects and reptiles that inhabit the island. It will allow a more homogeneous distribution of drinking water. Additional funds will be committed by WSF to conduct a study on the effects of this project. This information will be property to Mexico Hunts and WSF and can be shared with other organizations at their discretion. The remaining funds will be used at the discretion of the WSF board.
To support this effort, seventy-five (75) $1,000 donors are sought. For each donation of $1,000, your name will be entered in a draw for a Carmen Island desert bighorn sheep hunt valid for the 2013 - 2014 season. Donations are tax deductible in both Canada and the USA to the full extent allowed by law. The hunt is non transferable unless approved by committee decision. (The goal of giving every donor a chance to win the hunt is to reward their conservation efforts - not to have someone win the hunt and resell it)
The projected is named after one of the most recognized North American archery sheep hunters. The amiable Tom Hoffman has a special affinity to the Island and is a true friend to the bowhunting community. A life member of WSF, Hoffman is humbled that his friends have rallied behind this project. Tom has hunted Carmen Island and immediately recognized the need for this project. He is proud to lend his name to such a wonderful conservation project.
Mexico Hunts has commissioned a company in Monterey to design a unique crystal piece to be given to each donor, recognizing their contribution. These awards will be presented to donor attendees at the 2013 Wild Sheep Foundation convention in Reno, Nevada January 30th – February 2nd. Donors will also be formally recognized at that time.
All funds will be held in trust by WSF and will be returned if the full amount is not raised.
To donate, or for more information, please contact Tom Foss at tom.foss@rbc.com or by phone at 403-299-7128.
The hunt drawing will take place once the 75 donation spots have been filled.
